Project/Programme Experience
Mike has considerable experience in all aspects of Project/ Programme Management primarily within IT systems development but also involving general Business Change and the Construction Industry.
Mike obtained his first experiences of Project Management in the construction industry where he was responsible for the building of 40+ Jobcentres. He then went on to obtain a solid grounding as an IT professional covering firstly COBOL programming and Relational Database Management and later Systems Analysis and team leader. During this time he studied for three years and obtained honours degree level qualification in Information Technology.
In 1990 he moved into IT project management where, starting with small, low risk projects, he has developed his skills, knowledge and experience to the point where he now has a track record of successful delivery of 20+ medium and large sized projects. His typical responsibilities now include projects in excess of £1 million, involving 50+ staff over a 12-18 month time span.
Of special note was his year as head of planning and controls on the largest change management programme experienced by the Department for Education and Employment (£348 million and 1,200 man-years of effort). During this time he was directly responsible for a staff of 62 including in house and commercial consultants.
As a director of Project Performance he has seen the company grow from humble beginnings to become a highly successful training and consultancy business, acknowledged to have amongst the highest calibre of presenters and an enviable client base.
Prior to this Mike worked for the Duhig Berry (then the premier project management training organisation & part of the Xansa / FI Group). For three years Mike worked as a Principal Consultant in Project Management with responsibility for providing advice and guidance on problematic, high profile projects together with the introduction of Project Management Methodologies to a number of major companies. This has included the adaptation of the method to suit the various companies’ practises, development / deliveries of training courses and providing direct mentoring and support to new projects.
Always keen to keep his experience current he also worked as a Senior Project Manager for a variety of high profile customers in both mainframe and distributed systems development projects.
Prior to joining Xansa/FI Group he worked as a Senior Project Management Consultant with responsibility for establishing and operating Programme Support Offices, Project Management Offices and Project Support Offices. Alongside this he performed specialist Project Management consultancy assignments to strategic, high profile, projects with budgets often in excess of £10m. He was often called upon to work on detachment to many government departments performing a similar role.
He is a recognised authority on the PRINCE2 and other project management methodologies and has worked closely with the Association for Project Management and the Information Systems Examination Board on the design and implementation of PM qualifications and examination based training courses.
